How Often Should You Clean Your A/C Coils?
Cleaning the condenser coils of an AC unit does not need to be an overwhelming or time-consuming task; all it requires is little knowledge and basic tools. Here is a step-by-step guide that will assist with efficiently maintaining your AC unit.
Safety First
Before you start, ensure your safety by taking these precautions:
Turn off the power: Disconnect the power supply to your AC unit. You can do this at the circuit breaker or by switching it off from the disconnect box near the unit.
Wear protective gear: Put on safety goggles as well as gloves to shield yourself from dust, debris, and any cleaning solutions you might use.
Gather the Necessary Tools
To clean your condenser coils, you will need a few essential tools and supplies:
Screwdriver: To remove the access panel from the condenser unit.
Soft brush or coil cleaning brush: This tool will help you eliminate loose dirt and debris from the coils.
A vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment: Ideal for sucking up loose dirt and debris.
Water hose with a sprayer nozzle: To wash away stubborn dirt and grime.
Commercial coil cleaner/mixture of mild detergent and water: Choose a cleaner suitable for condenser coils and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Access the Condenser Coils Unit
Locate your AC’s outdoor condenser unit. It’s typically situated outside your home, on the side or back. Once you’ve found it, use a screwdriver to remove the access panel, which protects the condenser coils.
Remove Loose Debris
Use a soft coil cleaning brush to gently sweep away loose dirt, leaves, and debris. Be careful not to damage the coils during this step.
Vacuum the Condenser Coils
With a vacuum cleaner equipped, carefully vacuum the coils to remove any remaining loose debris. This will ensure a cleaner surface for the next steps.
Apply Cleaning Solution
Depending on the type of condenser coil cleaner you’re using, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If you prefer a DIY solution, mix a mild detergent and water in a bottle. Disperse the solution evenly onto the coils.
Let the Solution Sit
Let the cleaning solution sit on the coils for a few minutes. This will help to break down and loosen stubborn dirt and grime.
Rinse with Water
After the solution has had time to work, use a water hose with a sprayer nozzle to rinse the condenser coils thoroughly. Ensure that you spray from the top down so the debris is washed away.
Reassemble and Restore Power
Once you are satisfied that the coils are clean, reattach the access panel to the condenser unit. Turn the power back on from the circuit breaker or disconnect box.
